Salmon and Inland Fishing
Do you dream of catching that big salmon? Or do you want to try your luck fishing for char, grayling or trout? How about ice-fishing under the northern lights? Varanger is a paradise for anglers and there are many rivers and lakes teeming with fish ready to be caught. The combination of excellent fishing opportunities, the exotic surroundings and the unique wilderness turns a fishing trip in Varanger into an unforgettable experience.
The best known rivers for anglers are Bergebyelva, Jakobselv, Skallelva and Komagelva, and just a stonesthrow away from Varanger is one of the world's best rivers for salmon fishing, Tanaelva.
All those over the age of 16 who wish to fish in rivers and lakes where salmon are present need to purchase two different types of fishing licence. Fiskeravgiften is needed for fishing in all rivers; in addition you will need to purchase a local licence for the river in which you wish to fish. The local licences can be obtained from control huts near the rivers. All rivers in which salmon are present have an angling season which stretches from 15.06-17.08. There are some local variations to these dates, so please check in advance.
Foreigners and those not resident in Finnmark also need to purchase an additional fishing licence for all types of fishing activity in rivers and lakes in the county. Those under 18 or over 67 are exempt from purchasing this licence, as long as they are not planning to fish in areas where salmon are present.
You will find more information on which rivers and lakes you can fish in under the links to the three municipalities. You will also find information about where you can purchase the licences and where you can disinfect your equipment.
